Workshop Norms

Workshop Norms

  • Honesty
  • Kindness
  • Desire to help one another become the best we can be.
  • Open-mindedness, willing to break habits.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Let's share lots of poems
  • Let's critique rather heavily and honestly but not meanly
  • I want to be inspired to do lots of writing
  • Silence cell phones
  • Be respectful of others, thoughts, opinions, feelings, etc.
  • Feel free to ask questions if a line does not make sense
  • Listen with appreciation
  • No cigarettes
  • Would love to know what they "hear" in it, what the poem means to the reader as the beginning point of their/our constructive criticism
  • No heavy scents or perfumes
  • Cell phones on vibrate or meeting, unless circumstances dictate otherwise
  • No liquids or sticky things near the machines
  • No ad-hominem attacks
  • Balanced criticism, positive comments first, then crits
  • Specific crits, instead of "I like it/I don't like it"--locate the comment, "what specifically do you like/not like?"
  • Always okay to just duck out and follow the poem.
